The Kingdom

Salam all. Witty here, not Fuzzy, since some people are still confusing us :) It's finally the weekend, so thought I'd post something.

A friend of mine sent me an e-mail about a new movie due out in September 2007, called The Kingdom. The story starts when a terrorist detonates a bomb in a Western housing compound in Riyadh. Yup! Riyadh, KSA! So, of course, the Americans, being the best at everything, take over with FBI special agent Ronald Fleury (Jamie Foxx) assembling an 'elite' team to go to KSA and catch the 'madman'.

At the beginning, I was really appalled by the idea. Not only are the Americans parading another all-American-heroes-the-only-ones-who-can-save-the-day type of movie, but now they are filming it in Saudia Arabia! And Allah knows how I hate the way they dress us up and make us behave in those movies. They actually have a scene where they are talking to the King or a Prince, convincing him that they are the best and they know what they're doing, so 'leave it to us, Your Highness'! As if no-one else has the brains but them. I'm not anti-Americans, but I'm anti-what-they-do or claim to be able to do. The skeptical me kept thinking that they are going to make fun of Saudis (i.e. Arabs in general) just to prove they're the best.

However, after a while, I thought I'd give it a shot and go see it when it's out. Simply because I was also skeptical of Syriana at the beginning. Thought they are probably making fun of us, so I won't go watch it in the movies; I don't want to be humiliated in public. If I must, I may buy the DVD later and be humiliated one-on-one. But I've decided to go to the movies after I heard that George Clooney was called a traitor for starring in it, because it showed the real American policy. To be honest, the movie was crowded with so many events that you won't be able to keep up with them all. Nevertheless, I LOVED it! Surely it was funny (we laughed out loud at the movies) when Clooney was trying to pass as a fluent Arabic speaker, but I loved the fact that the Prince in Syriana had the Kuwaiti Royal Family's name, dressed like UAE and adopted the Saudi Royal Family's story. All in all, it was a new kind of movie. I'm hoping it's the beginning of an era, American honesty era, which so far has been an oxymoron.

So, back to The Kingdom. Let's wait and see.
